Bauchi State on Saturday hosted a high-profile public lecture as part of activities marking its 50th anniversary, drawing governors, diplomats, former leaders and prominent traditional rulers from across Nigeria and beyond.
The event, held in Bauchi, brought together Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; former governors of Bauchi State; the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Gautier Mignot; and several ambassadors from different countries. Senior government officials, academics and representatives of cultural institutions were also present.
The lecture reviewed the history of Bauchi State since its creation in 1976, tracing milestones in governance, culture and natural resource management over the last five decades.
Speakers reflected on the state’s evolution, its challenges and the opportunities available for future growth.
EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot praised Governor Bala Mohammed for what he described as “visible progress” in infrastructure and governance.
He said the administration had shown commitment to improving the welfare of citizens, adding that Bauchi’s development trajectory was attracting international attention.
“I am impressed by the governor’s performance and the positive changes recorded in the state,” Mignot said, expressing confidence that Bauchi would deepen partnerships and continue on its path of development.
Former governor Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu, who chaired the occasion, also lauded Mohammed’s leadership. He urged future administrations to sustain existing development plans and avoid policy reversals, which he said had often slowed growth in many states.
“Continuity remains central to long-term development. Leaders must build on what works and protect the state’s development blueprint,” Mu’azu said.
In his remarks, Governor Mohammed thanked the dignitaries for honouring the state during what he described as a “historic milestone.”
He pledged to consolidate economic reforms, pursue investor-friendly policies and transform Bauchi into a major destination for investment and tourism.
“Our commitment is to build an economically self-sustaining state that offers opportunities to all,” he said.
The Golden Jubilee lecture forms part of a series of events lined up to celebrate Bauchi’s 50 years since its creation.
The anniversary is expected to continue with cultural exhibitions, awards and community development activities across the state.
